Kambiz Dowlat, M.D. Named to Inaugural Class of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Pink Tie Guys
Honored for Continuing Efforts in Fight Against Breast Cancer
Chicago, IL – October 2011 – Kambiz Dowlat, M.D., FACS, a Chicago-based breast surgeon and pioneer of micro-invasive breast cancer procedures, was selected as one of two physicians to join the first-year class of Pink Tie Guys, an exclusive group of KoMEN honored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure® for “making a difference in the fight against breast cancer.”
“I am truly honored to be recognized by Susan G. Komen, a great organization dedicated to the battle against breast cancer,” said Dr. Dowlat. “I have devoted 25 years to the study of breast cancer and improving techniques for its diagnosis and treatment. I have focused on minimally invasive surgical procedures to lessen the impact on a woman with breast cancer.”
Dr. Dowlat is a Professor of Surgery at Rush University Medical Center. In 1985, he introduced into the U.S. from Sweden the stereotactic needle biopsy device for diagnosis of breast lesions, now used in more than 2,000 medical centers nationwide. Subsequently, Dr. Dowlat developed the Interstitial Laser Therapy (ILT) process, utilizing laser energy to destroy breast tumors as an alternative to surgery “lumpectomy.” This research was supported by the Brian Piccolo Cancer Foundation and the McCormick Foundation, which also helped fund his next project – the detailed analysis of lymph glands, the initial site of spread of malignant cells from breast cancer.
The laser therapy procedure received FDA approval for treatment of benign tumors in 2007 and, in 2011, was approved for human trials on malignant breast tumors.
Dr. Dowlat received his medical training at the University of London and surgical training in Oxford and Bristol United Kingdom. It was during his tenure on the faculty of the University of Chicago, 1981-1987, where he began to specialize in the field of breast cancer.
Dr. Dowlat's clinical practice is focused on reducing a patient's fear of breast cancer. “There is more than enough anxiety for a woman facing the unknown as it relates to the subject of breast cancer,” explained Dr. Dowlat. “Our professional and compassionate staff accommodates patients without protracted wait-times for an appointment, whether it's a routine visit, a consultation or screening, or a diagnostic or other surgical procedure.”
